The incredible sculptor and concept artist, Simon Lee (also known as Spiderzero) started a new HYPERCREATURES series on his website! A series where he takes different artists creatures and re-imagines them through his amazing sculpts~ and I was thrilled and flattered to find out he chose the Courtesan from the "Hell's Courtesan" 2 part Marquis story as his first reimagination sculpt in the series!!

I had the great pleasure of working with him during the early concept days of Guillermo Del Toro's "Pacific Rim", and it was incredible to see the life and detail, not to mention the character and imagination he brings to all his sculpts and designs! Comic Twart is a great blog showcase of amazing artists who every week draw their versions of different characters~ and I was honored to learn in April that the Marquis was chosen to be "twarted"! First up is the man who chose the Marquis to be Twarted~ the incredible Francesco Francavilla, who is not just one of those artists who seem like they can draw anything. I think Francesco actually does draw everything! The man's a powerhouse of a workhorse and a wonderful designer too as proven by this great Marquis lobby card! Makes me wish there was a 1930's Marquis movie serial hidden in a vault somewhere!

A promo piece I recently did to test out some of the background effects I wanted to use in the new Marquis books. In the original stories reprinted in the Marquis: Inferno, I used hand applied shading film that adhered directly to the original art to give the different grey tones and textures. For the new graphic novels starting with The Marquis and the Midwife, I'm using more digital greys for the finished page that lets me play around with more depth of field.

Below the main image: A look at the process from start to finish~ I pencil loose (far left) and block in the Marquis figure and main buildings before adding all the details to the architecture during the inks. I knew I was going to fade out the background, so I added a lot of line work to the buildings and kept the Marquis as a simple shape to frame the center image. After adding the greys and different effects to the image, drawing in the falling snow is the last part of the job!

A big highlight of the recent Emerald City Comicon was meeting the Marquis in person, who wandered the convention floors in search of hidden devils!! Chris Dimoff created this amazing Marquis costume (in incredible detail) to match the comic counterpart! Chris doesn't have a website, but if you were at the show and took any pics of him as the Marquis, he'd love to see them (and I would too!)

Sorry I didn't make it down the huge San Diego Comic Con (SDCC) going on this week~ but I was able to send along the Marquis and contribute to the CBLDF (Comic Book Legal Defense Fund) sketch card auction! I did 2 cards, one B.P.R.D and one for the Marquis that were turned into limited autograph cards you can collect at the convention and also support the CBLDF~ and if you enjoy the devils in the Marquis stories, then you can appreciate the good fight that the CBLDF does to protect the First Amendment rights of comic creators, publishers and retailers.

On Saturday night at the convention the original artwork for the Marquis card above and also the one I did for BPRD will be auctioned off along with tons of original art from different artists! (Starting at 7:30 in Room 3 of the San Diego Convention Center). You can find more information about the CBLDF and the auction in the link below!

Last weekend's Heroes Con was an amazing convention~ enjoyed meeting everyone who stopped by the table and catching up with old and new friends. I'll be in Charlotte, North Carolina this weekend (June 4-6) for the wonderful Heroes Con (and my last convention of this year)~ I'll be set up in artist alley at table 112, on the corner next to Mike Mignola! Along with some preview artwork to upcoming projects in my portfolio, I'll have original art to BPRD and the Marquis for sale along with tpbs, a new convention sketchbook and Marquis t-shirts! I'll also have some of the freebie Marquis buttons at the table for anyone stopping by!

Also on Saturday, June 5th at 4:30pm~ I'll be on a panel with Ben Templesmith and moderated by The Comics Reporter's own Tom Spurgeon to talk about "Monsters and the Macabre in Comics"!

Home, sweet Hell! Sorry about the missed Diableries the passed couple weeks~ a couple of conventions threw me off, but the weekend Marquis fanart will be back on track. Starting with this great drawing by the amazing Kassandra Heller.

I got to be artist alley neighbors with Kassandra last weekend at the S.P.A.C.E expo and she was kind enough to draw me a really cool Marquis (that I'll post in the coming weeks), but during the show she also drew the above piece on her table cover (and I was able to convince her to tear it off for me after the show)~ showing the Marquis wishing he was home surrounded by me and my fiancee's menagerie of pets.

I've been invited down for the Staple! Independent Media Expo this Saturday in Austin, Texas and also provided this years mascot (the above Town Crier Devil), based on their "Staplegator"!

The convention is on March 6th from 11am- 7pm, and I'll be doing a Q&A at noon. I'll also be at the pre-party Meet and Greet at Austin Books and Comics on Friday (starts at 8pm), along with taking part in Saturdays Live Art Show after the convention. I've been invited by Art Originals and the Toronto Cartoonist Workshop to Canada this week for an art exhibition and presentation on storytelling. The 3 hour workshop is on Feb. 27 starting at 1pm and I'll be discussing a bit about my career and also the process of creating a page from script to inks and the storytelling steps involved. Later in the day, I'll be at the art exhibition from 7:30-11:30pm that will feature original artwork from The Marquis, B.P.R.D., Sandman Mystery Theatere, and Zombies that Ate the World on display along with having a limited number of letterpress prints of the exhibition poster available.

On Sunday, Feb 28 I'll also be at the Toronto Comicon from 11-5pm. So if you're in the area, please stop by and say hello!
